What Do You Need?

Reimagining Digital Spaces of Support

April 2018

What Do You Need? uses digital space to imagine supportive and empowering environments in the context of combating rape culture.

Viral hashtags from #YesAllWomen to #MeToo have become synonymous with conversations about rape culture and social media. While this use of online spaces has provided insight into the ways in which rape culture permeates society, is it possible to use digital space to (re)imagine supportive environments?

This non-traditional data visualization explores the diversity of ways that people imagine supportive and empowering environments. What Do You Need? is a visualization of imaginative spaces of support that uses participant submitted visual data to make computer generated collages. Each collage, generated one at a time, is comprised of elements from various participants’ submissions. Visualizing the data in this way results in images that invite the audience to find connections between objects, space, and the ways different people imagine supportive environments.
